Plastic Free July is a global movement which encourages millions of people around the world to be the solution to plastic pollution. Whether it is something small like replacing your plastic toothbrush with a bamboo one or something huge like organizing a beach cleanup, every step taken towards making the world plastic free is significant.
Urvari, an environmental organisation based in Navi Mumbai, run by 7 seventeen year olds, decided to take up the Plastic Free Challenge, and came up with the perfect solution to the problem: ecobricks.
Ecobricks are used plastic bottles filled with plastic waste to make them strong and durable. Ecobricks can be used to make multiple things of public utility, ranging from dustbins and animal shelters to even bus stands. And here's the best part: even a small dustbin recycles as much as 20 kgs of single use plastic.
Each year, 8 million metric tons of plastic ends up in the oceans. Urvari hopes to put a small part of it in the making of dustbins instead. After organizing multiple plantation drives, cleanliness drives and upcycle contests, their next challenge is finding people willing to save the plastic waste generated at their homes and donate it for this cause. It is an easy thing, it just requires a little something inside of you that wants to make a change in the world. So if you live in Mumbai, Thane, or Navi Mumbai, and are willing to participate in the movement, contact Urvari through their Instagram page @_urvari_ and help
them achieve their goal!
